Indian Oil Scientist wins ‘Mind Odyssey’ Award

In the finals of Mind Odyssey, held during 3rd WPC Youth Forum, S. Saravanan, a young scientist from Indian Oil (R&D) was crowned the undisputed king of innovation and ingenuity and took home prize money of US $ 5000.

Saravanan presented his concept on ‘Gasoline sulfur removal using spent catalyst, a simple and novelistic approach.’ Concepts presented by other finalists were equally good, innovative and interesting and gave a tough competition to Saravanan for the prize money. Adit Agarwal, a very young chap from EIL presented his idea on ‘Analysis of adulteration in the fuels by studying its optical behavior using optical fiber’. Meneses Leon Prebeau and Sunniva Bratt Slette, from CAWPC Youth Committee, Canada and NUST, Trondheim, NORWAY respectively presented their work on ‘Geothermal Down – hole miniature turbines: increasing oil recovery and helping oil industry move towards a sustainable energy future’. P. Nagarjuna and Mihir Jyothi Dutta, Students from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Rae Bareli talked about MVPO – Reducing Social Wastage in Petroleum Retailing’.

The first stage of MIND ODYSSEY, conducted through the youth forum portal www.fueltheyouth.com, received huge response and 48 innovative concepts papers were submitted online. The distinguished jury comprising of Mr. P K BHOWMICK (ED – KDMIPE, ONGC), Mr. K MURALI (DIRECTOR [R], HPCL), Mr. GANDHAM SRIGANESH (GM [R&D], HPCL) and Dr. D. K. TULI (GM [R&D], IOCL) evaluated all the papers and selected top 4 papers for presentation in the final round. On November 2nd, 2010 all the four finalists presented their papers. Each presentation was given 13 minutes to present and 5 minutes interaction with the audience and jury. The papers were very interesting and threw new ideas that would contribute towards the advancement of energy industry, offer value addition, deliver new benefits and provide solutions to the challenges faced by the industry. Audience thoroughly enjoyed the presentations and the jury was highly impressed of the concepts presented. The winner was selected by both the jury members and audience.

The youth forum team congratulates the winner on his victorious endeavor. The other three papers are also very valuable ones. We congratulate the rest of the finalists as well as other participants for their brilliant participation in the event.
